Maybank employees clock over 6,500 volunteer hours for its Corporate Responsibility Day

20 August 2016

Employees empowered with $150,000 to develop corporate responsibility projects in partnership with five beneficiary organisations

In the lead-up to Maybank’s Global Corporate Responsibility (CR) Day today, more than 1,200 Maybank employees in Singapore have devoted over 6,500 volunteer hours since April to develop community projects that are specifically catered to the needs of five beneficiary organisations.

Staff were empowered with $150,000 to plan their projects, which include painting of 19 specially chosen wall murals for Movement for the Intellectually Disabled (MINDS) and the Institute of Mental Health, as well as refurbishment of more than 50 flats of needy families identified by Lions Befrienders and Montfort Care. (Please refer to Appendix for more information on the projects.)

“We want to give employees the freedom to come up with interesting, ground-up initiatives that they are passionate about supporting,” said Mr Lim Hong Tat, CEO of Maybank Singapore. “It’s heartening to see such a strong show of support from staff who have put in time and effort to volunteer for the different projects. We hope these cheerful, colourful wall murals and cleaned-up, refurbished homes will make a meaningful impact to the lives of the beneficiaries.”

Four community events held in conjunction with Maybank’s Global CR Day
Emeritus Senior Minister (ESM) Goh Chok Tong unveiled the 6,500 volunteer hours Maybank achieved for its annual Global Corporate Responsibility Day at an event held this morning at the Singapore Sports Hub. The figure is more than double the 3,200 volunteer hours the bank clocked in total for the whole of last year.

At the event, forty needy families under WeCare@MarineParade each received $300 worth of grocery vouchers donated by Maybank. ESM Goh also flagged off around 500 staff volunteers and beneficiaries who took part in the 3M 50th Anniversary Step-Up Challenge@ South East being held at the venue. They completed a total of 47, 560 steps, which would be converted into 3M household product hampers for needy families in the South East District.

Concurrently, a National Day party was held for seniors at the Lions Befrienders Senior Activities Centre in Ang Mo Kio, where Maybank staff celebrated the nation’s birthday with 80 pioneer generation seniors. Two other carnivals with a galore of games, fringe activities, performances and food stalls were also held for beneficiaries at the MINDS Fernvale Gardens School and the Institute of Mental Health.

About Maybank Global Corporate Responsibility Day 2016
The Maybank Global Corporate Responsibility Day is an annual event which sees more than 45,000 Maybankers from the Maybank Group’s offices in 20 countries come together to reaffirm their commitment to social development and welfare, as well as environmental conservation through various community programmes.
This is the seventh year that the event is being held, with the theme “Enabling Communities with Solutions”. Maybank Singapore’s initiative focuses on improving living conditions for four target groups – lonely seniors, vulnerable families, people with intellectual disabilities and mental health patients.
This is the first year where organisation of Maybank’s Global Corporate Responsibility Day was decentralised, with staff from Maybank, Maybank Kim Eng and Etiqa Insurance championing wall mural painting and home improvement projects.

Improving the lives of lonely seniors and vulnerable families
More than 40 home improvement projects were done in partnership with Lions Befrienders for lonely elderly, and another 10 would be conducted for vulnerable families identified by Montfort Care. The refurbishment work done to improve the condition of the flats included cleaning, painting, repairing as well as replacement of essential furniture and electrical appliances.

Maybank supported WeCare@MarineParade’s ‘Marine Parade Gives Back!’ community volunteering month initiative, and donated $12,000 worth of grocery shopping vouchers to match the community volunteering hours completed by residents in July. These were presented to forty beneficiary families staying in the neighbourhood. ‘Marine Parade Gives Back!’ is an initiative first mooted by ESM Goh to recognise existing volunteering efforts in Marine Parade and to encourage residents to contribute back to the community by doing volunteer work.

Brightening the lives of people with intellectual disabilities and mental health patients
Thirteen wall murals were painted in ward activity rooms at the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) to brighten up the living environment for patients. The mural designs were specially designed based on feedback from IMH and were also approved by the institute’s doctors.
Six wall murals were also completed at MINDS Fernvale Gardens School. The murals were specially designed in discussion with the school, and painted on six special classroom walls for easier visual identification of the classroom purpose (for example art, dance, cooking and computer studies).
In addition, over $65,000 was donated jointly by Maybank and its customers in support of the various partnering beneficiary organisations.
