Maybank Islamic sponsored brand new laptops worth S$92,000 to MENDAKI to benefit 60 students from low-income families

Maybank Islamic announced its donation of S$92,000 to Yayasan MENDAKI (“MENDAKI”) to provide 60 primary school Malay/Muslim students from low-income families with brand new laptops. The first batch of 20 students received brand new laptops for their school and learning needs at the laptop distribution ceremony entitled “Maybank Islamic – MENDAKI Digital Headstart for Students” that was held today at the Auditorium at Woods Square.

Maybank Islamic is the Islamic finance arm of Maybank Group and today's donation marked a closer partnership between Maybank Islamic and MENDAKI to provide more support to Malay/Muslim students from low-income families.

Dr John Lee, Country CEO and CEO of Maybank Singapore, said, “We are pleased to collaborate with MENDAKI for this community project. This initiative is in line with our mission of ‘Humanising Financial Services’ to improve the lives of a million households across ASEAN by 2025 and contribute towards the betterment of the people and society in ASEAN. With digitalisation becoming more prevalent in how we live, work, and learn, it is important to ensure digital inclusion and literacy for vulnerable communities.”

The laptop donation is funded by Maybank Islamic’s “Ikhwan Credit Card Charity Fund”, where the bank contributes a percentage of customer spending on selected credit cards issued in Malaysia to charitable bodies. Under the charity element, Maybank Islamic has allocated more than RM4 million in charity funds based on total customers’ transactions since the launch of Islamic credit cards in June 2014.

Maybank Islamic has been a strong supporter of MENDAKI’s mission to empower the Malay/Muslim community towards success. Maybank has donated more than S$70,000 since 2018 to support MENDAKI’s programmes, such as Project Positif, Kapal Haji book launch and Education Trust Fund.

At the laptop distribution ceremony, the students and their parents also attended a workshop with interactive quizzes to learn about cyber safety and protect themselves against online threats like phishing and malware. This learning initiative is in line with Maybank’s support for the national movement, Digital for Life, mooted by Infocomm Media Development Authority. In the later part of the year, Maybank plans to roll out more initiatives to provide digital inclusion and literacy for low-income families and seniors.

Mdm Zuraidah Abdullah, CEO of MENDAKI, welcomes the collaboration. She shared, “I am heartened by this partnership with Maybank Islamic to support our Malay/Muslim students in their learning and educational needs in school. As we enter a future where digitalisation is key and laptops play an integral part of a student’s learning, the support from Maybank will help our students in pursuing their studies and achieving their dreams.”

“I am also glad to see the parents’ involvement in the workshop conducted by Maybank Islamic. Their presence reflects their commitment in their children’s education. This is in-line with MENDAKI’s strategies of empowering our parents as their child’s first teacher, nurturer, and partner in preparing our children to be resilient and future-ready,” added Mdm Zuraidah.

One of the beneficiaries, 12-year-old Danny Adryan Hamdi, from Gan Eng Seng Primary School, said, “I am thankful and grateful to receive the laptop for my studies. With the laptop, I hope it will help me focus on my studies and do well in school.”
