Post-pandemic travel is back in full flight. Travelling soon? Here are some tips and tricks for big savings.

A new year may have started, but the holiday season is still going strong. If you've made plans to go globetrotting, you may be feeling the pinch with big ticket items like flight tickets and accommodation.

That doesn't mean you can't enjoy yourself. Saving on small items can add up. Learn how to maximise your dollars and cents - and even save while you spend.

1. Do the math when it comes to data roaming

Data roaming is not just for data guzzlers. Essential activities like navigation and ordering food require data too - which can be expensive overseas.

Before travelling, decide between a SIM card and a data roaming plan.

Consider your needs to decide on the best option. Data roaming can be bought pre-departure and activated on arrival, but may be more expensive, especially when making calls. Local SIM cards are usually cheaper and can be purchased on arrival at airport kiosks or SIM card stores. If you're country-hopping, consider getting wider coverage with an international SIM card or a more flexible data roaming plan.

2. Invest in a public transport pass

Hop on a bus or train to get to know a city up close - but do so without whipping your wallet out to pay for each ride as it comes.

Many cities around the world offer public transport passes, which are a great way to save. Such passes give you unlimited or extensive access to a city's transport network for a selected duration. Try the Oyster Card in London or the Octopus Card in Hong Kong. You can even "prefecture-hop" in Japan with the Japan Rail Pass.

Skip exorbitant taxis and costly single rides, and say hello to peace of mind while travelling.

3. Pick a travel destination with a favourable exchange rate

Picking a travel destination where the exchange rate works for you is a great way to stretch your dollar. Choosing a country where your local currency is strong and the cost of living is low can go a long way.

There are plenty of destinations a stone's throw away from Singapore that fit the bill. From Phuket to Penang, there is something for everyone - whether you're a foodie, explorer or sightseer. Further afield, backpacking destinations like Guatemala and Bolivia promise an affordable adventure.

To maximise savings, avoid changing currency at the last minute, especially at airports which may not have the best rates. If you prefer to go cashless, check whether your bank card can be activated overseas - but take note of transaction fees.

4. Travel with Maybank

Thankfully, some credit cards are made to go the extra mile for you - on your holiday break.
Broaden your horizons with the Maybank Horizon card, which allows you to earn TREATS Points on the TREATS SG App at Singapore restaurants, or on Grab and Gojek. These points can be converted to air miles.

Already going on holiday? You can also earn as you book tickets. Get 5X TREATS Points, or 2 air miles, with every dollar you spend on air tickets from any airline. You can also earn TREATS Points when you purchase travel packages and make transactions in foreign currency.

If you'd like to lounge around, you can spend your way there too. Make a purchase of over $1,000 in a single retail transaction three months prior to your travel date to enjoy complimentary three-hour lounge access. And for that extra reassurance, charge your travel fares in full to the card, and get complimentary travel insurance coverage of up to $1,000,000.

This holiday season, travel savvy with the right credit card, and save enough for your next dream destination.

the bottom line:

Small decisions make a difference. Save big with small details like data roaming, public transport passes, choosing locations with favourable exchange rates and using the right travel credit card.
