Maybank Global Corporate Responsibility Day raises S$500,000 for President’s Challenge 2018

22 September 2018

About 1,000 Maybank staff volunteered at charity carnival and 50 community service activities

Maybank Singapore, together with its corporate donors and employees, raised S$500,000 in donations for the President’s Challenge 2018 at its annual Global Corporate Responsibility (CR) Day. The funds will go towards supporting programmes of four social service organisations under the Community Chest, namely Lions Befrienders, Montfort Care, Institute of Mental Health and MINDS.

Maybank Singapore’s CR theme for this year is Empowering For Life. Maybank Global CR Day culminated with a finale event that consisted of a charity carnival and a night walk, held at the Marina Barrage this evening. The guest-of-honour Mr Tan Chuan-Jin, Speaker of Parliament of Singapore and advisor to the Community Chest, witnessed the cheque donation that was presented by Dr John Lee, Country CEO and CEO of Maybank Singapore. Social service organisations and Maybank employees set up 20 carnival booths to raise funds and promote the awareness of various social causes. Service users also joined in the night walk with Maybank employees. Carnival attendees purchased carnival coupons and made donations towards President’s Challenge using PayNow QR Codes.

Besides donations, a total of 1,000 Maybank employees volunteered at today’s event and 50 other impactful community service activities with these four social service organisations in August and September, including home improvement and mural painting projects. The volunteering activities are aimed at enriching the quality of life for seniors who live alone, vulnerable families, persons with intellectual disabilities and persons with mental health conditions.

Dr John Lee, Country CEO and CEO of Maybank Singapore, said, “This is the ninth group-wide Maybank Global CR Day, and a milestone year for Maybank Singapore as we will be locally incorporating part of our banking business to further deepen Maybank’s commitment to the Singapore community. Global CR Day is a signature event for Maybank to live out our mission of ‘Humanising Financial Services’, strengthening our ties with the community.”

Dr John Lee added, “I am heartened to see that employees from the bank, Maybank Kim Eng, Etiqa Singapore and Maybank Asset Management planned a number of volunteer activities for our beneficiaries every year. Beyond just funding the beneficiaries, we want to empower our chosen beneficiaries to improve their living standards in the long term with the volunteering initiatives we have done. This year, we spruced up apartments for Lions Befrienders and Montfort Care service users, painted murals at MINDS and brought IMH patients out on outings to a baking class and a hydroponics farm to learn new life skills. Our engagement with these service users does not end here. We will continue befriending them through quarterly volunteer activities.”

Ms Charmaine Leung, Group Director of Fundraising & Engagement at NCSS and Managing Director at Community Chest, said, “The President’s Challenge represents a coming together of people from all walks of life, under the President’s patronage, to help the less fortunate, by giving of their time, skills and enterprise. Maybank Singapore has been an exemplary partner of President’s Challenge in this regard, having been very proactive in reaching out to their selected service users, and improving their quality of life through a customised volunteering programme and Global CR Day fundraising initiative in partnership with its corporate donors and employees.”

Maybank would like to thank all corporate donors and staff who have joined the Bank on this giving journey, especially Platinum-tier corporate donors who have donated S$10,000, namely Edmund Motor Pte Ltd, Ho Bee Foundation, I.Contemporary Living Pte Ltd, Kenso Leasing Pte Ltd, Kuok Singapore, Kwee Gee Pte Ltd, Lian Beng Construction, MCC Group, Pontiac Land, Precise Development Pte Ltd, Oxley Holdings Limited, ST Integrated Engineering Pte Ltd, TTJ Design and Engineering Pte Ltd, Yamako Pacific Pte Ltd, and NTT Singapore Pte Ltd/ Dimensions Data (Singapore) Pte Ltd.
